Bar/Bat Mitzvah

Students who have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony must begin midweek hebrew in 4th grade. Attendance in religious school is also required for Bar or Bat MItzvah. Parents of Bar and Bat Mitzvah candidates meet with the Rabbi, Cantor, Educator, and Executive Director in the Spring of 6th grade to discuss the details of Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation. Bar/Bat Mitzvah dates are selected approximately 2.5 years prior to the ceremony. Students who have a Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony commit themselves to further their Jewish education through attendance at Madison Midrasha at least up through and including Confirmation. B'nai Mitzvah students lead prayers, chant Torah, haftorah and give a devar Torah which they develop through study sessions with the Rabbi. Some post B'nai students are eligible to participate in the Cantor's post B'nai Mitzvah class with an opportuniaty to chant at service and to serve as teaching assistants in Hebrew school. All students, 10th grade and older, are eligible to apply to work as Sunday school assistants.
