Welcome to Temple Beth El

Shalom! Welcome to Temple Beth El, Madison’s Reform congregation!

Founded in 1939, our progressive Jewish community provides spiritual, educational, social, outreach, caring, and social justice opportunities for our members. Our congregation has always striven to provide support and strength in times of need, challenge and inspiration, as we seek the courage to make a difference in the world. We would love to have you join our Temple Beth El Community!

The benefits of Temple Beth El membership include our Hebrew and Religious Schools, lifecycle events, High Holiday worship entrance, access to our clergy, and the opportunity for involvement in our many committees, programs, Sisterhood and Men's Clubs, and our Temple Youth Group.

We are affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism, representing more than 900 North American Reform Jewish congregations. We also connect up with the World Union for Progressive Judaism, responsible for promoting progressive Judaism in cities on all continents. We are also deeply connected with the Hebrew Union College– Jewish Institute of Religion, educating synagogue professionals to maintain the future of Reform Judaism.

Please come to visit Temple Beth El. We’d be happy to show you around!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a member of Temple Beth El? What's the process?
We'd love to have you join us. Just e-mail our Executive Director at executivedirector@templebethelmadison.org or call us at (608) 238-3123 for more information and a membership packet.

Why should I join Temple Beth El?
Temple Beth El is home to a diverse, friendly group of people. At Temple Beth El, we support one another with a caring community and a culture of inclusiveness. We have weekly Shabbat services, adult education, religious school for children, and youth group, many groups and clubs, and great opportunities to meet other people.

I'd like to join, but I don't know anyone at Temple Beth El.
We have lots of opportunities for getting involved and meeting people, starting as soon as you join. Check out our Calendar and monthly newsletter, the Bulletin, to see the events taking place. The best way to get to know people is to get involved. If you have questions please contact our Program Director at program@templebethelmadison.org.

Why should I join now? My child is only two years old.
It is never too soon to be a part of the Jewish community. While we often think that synagogues are around to "teach Judaism" to our children, there is so much more. Synagogues provide ongoing opportunities to study, experience, and enjoy being connected to a Jewish community. Plus, our Shabbat for Tots program, offered on the 4th Saturday of the month is fun and allows you to meet other young families.

My kids are grown. What do I need a synogogue for?
While we offer many family-oriented programs that does not mean that we are only open to families with younger children. We focus on community building, with Sisterhood, Men's Club, adult education seminars, leadership opportunities, social action programs, and, of course, worship experiences. The synagogue's task is to enhance your connection with other Jews and your personal search for meaning.

What does it cost to join a synagogue? Isn't it expensive?
A Jewish sage once said that "the Gates of Prayer are always open." Reform synagogues are committed to keeping their gates open and inclusive to all, and Temple Beth El is no different. While the Temple has expenses like any other organization, we strive to ensure that financial constraints are never an obstacle to membership. Confidential discussions on reduced dues are encouraged if that will help you and your family join.

Do you welcome and support interfaith families?
Many of Temple Beth El's current member families are interfaith. We welcome members from diverse backgrounds. For more information visit the Outreach page.

What should I do next?
