Welcome to Temple Beth El

Shalom, and BaruchHabah! Greetings and Welcome!

We are Bonnie Denmark Friedman and Jonathan Biatch, President and Rabbi of Temple Beth El. We’re glad you visited our website, and we’d like to invite you to visit us in person as well. Until that time, think about taking this virtual tour of our building with us:

In one part of the building, our Religious School children sing and laugh their way down the halls under the direction of our Educator; in our offices, a young couple meets with the Rabbi to discuss the wedding that will begin their lives together. The Cantor is tutoring one of our many B’nai Mitzvah students; our Executive Director meets with a group of congregants to plan how Temple Beth El can continue to reach out to interfaith families; and our Program Director plans with other volunteers on ways to strengthen all the ages represented in our community, from eight days to age 90 and above.

Students of all ages come together, to strike glimmering sparks from the study of Torah and other Jewish texts. Our sanctuary fills to the brim with spirit and song; our Temple Beth El youth group engages our teenagers in meaningful programs and fun activities; and our Sisterhood and Men’s Club provide opportunities to educate, create community, and connect their members to the purposes of our congregation.

Every day at Temple Beth El is rich with possibility, surprise, and the enchantment that comes from this great gift that we call Judaism. This congregation has always striven to be a family of support and strength in times of need, of challenge and of inspiration, as we seek the courage to make a difference in the world.

  • We have always been the voice of Reform Judaism in Madison.
  • We are a community of sacred moments, a community of history, and, always, a community of commitment to the objective of TikkunOlam, the perfection of our world.
  • We are the bearers of a magnificent legacy, and we hope you’ll join us as together we share the bright future that lies ahead.

Please let us know when you’d like to come for an in-person visit! We’d be happy to show you around!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a member of Temple Beth El? What's the process?
We'd love to have you join us. Just e-mail our Executive Director at executivedirector@templebethelmadison.org or call us at (608) 238-3123 for more information and a membership packet.

Why should I join Temple Beth El?
Temple Beth El is home to a diverse, friendly group of people. At Temple Beth El, we support one another with a caring community and a culture of inclusiveness. We have weekly Shabbat services, adult education, religious school for children, and youth group, many groups and clubs, and great opportunities to meet other people.

I'd like to join, but I don't know anyone at Temple Beth El.
We have lots of opportunities for getting involved and meeting people, starting as soon as you join. Check out our Calendar and monthly newsletter, the Bulletin, to see the events taking place. The best way to get to know people is to get involved. If you have questions please contact our Program Director at program@templebethelmadison.org.

Why should I join now? My child is only two years old.
It is never too soon to be a part of the Jewish community. While we often think that synagogues are around to "teach Judaism" to our children, there is so much more. Synagogues provide ongoing opportunities to study, experience, and enjoy being connected to a Jewish community. Plus, our Shabbat for Tots program, offered on the 4th Saturday of the month is fun and allows you to meet other young families.

My kids are grown. What do I need a synogogue for?
While we offer many family-oriented programs that does not mean that we are only open to families with younger children. We focus on community building, with Sisterhood, Men's Club, adult education seminars, leadership opportunities, social action programs, and, of course, worship experiences. The synagogue's task is to enhance your connection with other Jews and your personal search for meaning.

What does it cost to join a synagogue? Isn't it expensive?
A Jewish sage once said that "the Gates of Prayer are always open." Reform synagogues are committed to keeping their gates open and inclusive to all, and Temple Beth El is no different. While the Temple has expenses like any other organization, we strive to ensure that financial constraints are never an obstacle to membership. Confidential discussions on reduced dues are encouraged if that will help you and your family join.

Do you welcome and support interfaith families?
Many of Temple Beth El's current member families are interfaith. We welcome members from diverse backgrounds. For more information visit the Outreach page.

What should I do next?
Learn about Temple Beth El by coming to Temple. Join us at Shabbat services; come to a Shabbat for Tots; attend Torah study on Saturday mornings; meet with the Rabbi, the Cantor, our staff, and our welcoming congregants. You can find out upcoming events from our Bulletin or our website calendar,
